Firewalls Won't Protect You in the Cloud | VMware | Design
Public Cloud has native security controls like AWS Security Groups, NACL's but distributed security brings a shared responsibility model to your end users and business owners. Do you fully understand what the services are exposing and understand what other components that touch? Scale this across many DevOps teams and add a highly dynamic set of public cloud-based services, the issue compounds itself. With VMware Secure State, we're bringing not just real-time security event detection, alerting but also a connected-threat model. Also, let's not re-invent the wheel, we'll show you how to bring in AWS GuardDuty data if it makes sense. The goal is to not just provide a security tool, but build a best-in-class data model.

Steve Tegeler
Steve Tegeler is the Worldwide Sr. Director of Solution Engineers focused on VMware’s Kubernetes offerings. Steve has a sickness. His sickness is that he loves getting new technology adopted by large enterprises. Steve tried more cow bell, but it didn’t work so he joined the cloud native applications business unit and it cured the fever. Steve’s background at VMware began with the acquisition of Nicira in 2012 as the Director of System Engineering for NSX and quickly built out a team of network focused presales Systems Engineers. In 2015, he lead the build out of a new team at VMware focused on leveraging VMware’s SDDC underneath the open source project of OpenStack. This launched VMware into solutions which combined the consumption model of opensource with the stable operations of VMware technology. And the trend continues now with PKS & Tanzu offering upstream Kubernetes on top of the SDDC and public clouds everywhere. Prior to VMware, Steve has held various consulting engineering roles at Cisco Systems working with their datacenter products. Steve resides in Bellevue, WA. Twitter @vstegeler

Building a Disaster Recovery Strategy: Lessons Learned From The Field | Community | Design
As applications become more complex and customer demands continue to grow, the importance of a resilient architecture is paramount. Disaster recovery (DR) needs to be build into any solution. Defining what to protect and how to do so is critical in any environment, but where do you start? How can you decide what needs to be protected in order to keep your business running smoothly? Once you identify these needs, how do you go about implementing them? More importantly, how can you do so in a way that makes your customers happy and keeps the reputation of your company intact? Effective DR strategies can be built in many ways and it's up to you to decide what is best for your business. We will provide examples of solutions that work to help make that decision easier and hopefully keep your customers happy.

Keynote | Reinventing your career with the help of the vCommunity
IT is continuously reinventing itself. Simultaneously as we develop expertise and influence in our careers, new technologies and new ways of solving business problems appear on the horizon. At some point you have to update your capabilities, and there's always the question of which technologies will endure and gain prominence making them worth your while to learn. I have found that I learn the best with a book, the internet and some quiettime, but I learn the fastest when someone else explains it to me and I'm able to ask questions. Having a community is most helpful in keeping up to date in your career. We will explore some of the current technologies I see to be the most relevant and career strategies we can leverage as part of the vCommunity.
